Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship provides an opportunity for a woman journalist working in the print, broadcast or Internet media to spend an academic year in a tailored program that combines access to MIT’s Center for International Studies and other Boston-area universities and two media companies, The Boston Globe and The New York Times. With this flexible structure, the fellow will have opportunities to pursue academic research as well as hone her journalistic skills covering topics related to human rights and social justice.

Research

As a research associate in residence at the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow will have access to a broad range of courses, seminars, working groups and other programs at MIT and several other area universities, including Harvard, Tufts and Boston University.  She will also be encouraged to present her work to faculty and graduate students in open seminars.

 

Reporting

Depending on her qualifications and interests, the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow may spend time at The Boston Globe or The New York Times. The companies will provide access to their networks of U.S. print and broadcast journalists and professional contacts, as well as their Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., and United Nations bureaus.

 

The fellowship will run from September-May. The fourth fellowship will begin in September 2008.

 

 

Applicants

A successful applicant will:

  • be dedicated to a career in journalism in the print, broadcast or Internet media (freelancers are eligible to apply)
  • be committed to coverage of human rights and social justice
  • describe how the fellowship will be a transformative experience for her career
  • have three or more years of journalism experience
  • have excellent written and verbal English skills
