Around the world, IWMF programs support and train journalists, spearhead innovative approaches to reporting on global issues and cultivate a powerful community of women in the news media.
Whether advocating for access, preparing women to tackle complex and controversial assignments, mentoring tomorrow’s newsroom leaders or sponsoring cutting edge research on the role and progress of women in media, the IWMF is a dedicated agent of change.

Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital News Frontier

The IWMF is working to diversify the digital news media landscape by expanding the voice and role of women entrepreneurs. Since 2011, six $20,000 grants have been awarded to women journalists seeking to launch their own innovative digital media startups. Grantees also receive ongoing pro-bono coaching to support their work.

Limited access to capital and training threaten women’s full participation as entrepreneurs in the digital news media. The IWMF’s grant initiative, funded by the Ford Foundation, tackles this disparity head on by combating these twin obstacles.

Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media

The Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media is a groundbreaking study that presents a comprehensive picture of women's standing in the news media worldwide.  The Global Report, unveiled in March 2011 at the International Conference of Women Media Leaders in Washington, D.C., includes data from more than 500 media organizations.  Top news executives from forty countries gathered to discuss its findings and create a plan of action to achieve gender equity in newsrooms globally.

Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship

The IWMF Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for a mid-career woman journalist to spend seven months combining reporting and research on human rights and social justice while taking classes at Boston-area universities and sharpening her professional skills at the Boston Globe and The New York Times.  The 2011-2012 fellow is Jackee Batanda from Uganda.

International Conference

Celebrating IWMF’s 20th anniversary year, the International Conference of Women Media Leaders brought together powerful minds to reflect on the future of women in the news media.

The conference was convened to create an international plan of action for advancing women journalists worldwide, and to design a roadmap for how to accomplish change.

Women media executives gathered in March 2011 at the George Washington University Global Media Institute in Washington, D.C.

HIV/AIDS Reporting in South Africa

The International Women’s Media Foundation’s (IWMF) HIV/AIDS Reporting fellowship program is preparing South African journalists to produce in-depth reporting on issues surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Fellows complete a specialized year-long training curriculum and receiving ongoing mentoring from experienced journalists and scholars.

Reporting on Women and Agriculture

With generous support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the IWMF implemented Reporting on Women and Agriculture: Africa, a four-year initiative that changed the way African media cover one of the most important topics on the continent.

The IWMF helped African journalists to boost coverage of agriculture and rural development and to increase women’s voices – both as journalists and as sources – in their reporting. Click here to read more.
