Courage in Journalism Awards

Every year the International Women’s Media Foundation honors brave women journalists who risk political persecution, injury and sometimes death in their efforts to expose corruption and champion human rights.

Global Research on Women

The IWMF is working on ground-breaking research on the status of women in the media worldwide. The new study, the Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media, will measure the career progress of women in the news media and use the results to help advocate for change.

The IWMF also tracks past studies on women in the news media, and will draw from this prior work in compiling the Global Report, which will be published in 2011.

4-Year Africa Project

With generous support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the IWMF launched "Reporting on Agriculture and Women: Africa." The project is energizing the way African media cover one of the most important topics on the continent.
The IWMF is helping African journalists to boost coverage of agriculture and rural development and increase women’s voices – both as journalists and as sources – in stories about agriculture

Funding HIV/AIDS Investigative Reporting

The IWMF is establishing 10 fellowships to train journalists in South Africa to write investigative reports on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. With support from the M*A*C  AIDS Fund, these experienced journalists will conduct interviews and write in-depth research for their publications in 2011.

President Robert Mugabe
Office of the President
Private Bag 7700
Causeway, Harare
Zimbabwe
Fax : +263 4 708 211

Dear President Mugabe:

We are writing on behalf of the International Women’s Media Foundation to express our alarm concerning Jestina Mukoko.

Mukoko, a former journalist who is currently a human rights activist, was abducted Dec. 3 from her home in Zimbabwe. She was taken by 15 men in plain clothes, some armed with handguns, according to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights. The men identified themselves as police from the Law and Order section of the Zimbabwe Republic Police. However, police in Zimbabwe have denied holding Mukoko. The reason for the kidnapping is still unknown, and police have refused to comment.

Mukoko is a former broadcaster at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, then privately-owned Voice of the People. She now heads the Zimbabwe Peace Project, a human rights organization that has reported regularly on political violence in 2008 as ZANU-PF was beaten in the first round of elections in March by the Movement for Democratic Change.

According to Human Rights Watch, four human rights defenders – including Mukoko – were abducted in less than one week by people suspected of working on behalf of the Zimbabwean authorities.

With the increase in such threats to journalists, and even deaths because of their work, we are concerned that Mukoko’s abduction signals more restrictions on free expression and press freedom amidst the political instability in Zimbabwe. All viewpoints should be allowed to be expressed in the media without force or coercion from authorities.

As a network of thousands of women and men in the media around the world who are supporters of a worldwide free press, we respectfully urge you to take immediate action to ensure that Mukoko – who was simply engaged in carrying out her professional work – is safely released. By using your power to ensure that justice is done in this case, you will take a step toward establishing a free and independent press in Zimbabwe.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
Akwe Amosu, co-chair

Jestina Mukoko and at least 23 pro democracy actvists, including another journalist, Shadreck Manyere have been abducted from their homes and places of work in Zimbabwe recently. I demand their immediate release. Jestina has worked tirelessly for democracy and human rights. I hope other women journalists, particularly in the Southern African Development Community, will put their names to this petition.

I am ashamed of the continual fickle complaining that goes on in this country, when we have one of the most beautifully upheld democracies in this world. This abduction is an absolute outrage. And Imperialist Mugabe needs to realize his time is now over.

Those of us who closely follow what goes on in Zimbabwe know that Jestina Mukoko poses no danger to so-called national security, which is a camouflage for tryranny and elimination of freeodm of press. It is a shame that those around President Mugabe have not learnt that tryranny and evil deeds will finally be overcome.

One single violation against a woman somewhere in the world going unpunished affects us a million times a million ways wherever we are. In Jestina's case, her abduction from savage men who know no human values or have any trace of manhood, this horrifying, unhumane and unspeakable act causes alarm and the need for something urgent to be done. Her very life is in grave danger. I pray for Jestina and I am ashamed I can do little.

I feel the pain of the Zimbabwe media. Here in Kenya we are no better. We seem to be going right back to where we started from, where harrassment of journalists was the norm. We must unite and stop these African politicians(I do not call them leaders coz they are not),from muzzling the media. They cannot win this war. Though they have the guns, we have the mighty digital pen. Aluta continua Roseleen, Nairobi

Let President Mugabe see reason to have Jestina released, she is not an opposition to his government, but a rights advocate who is there to ensure the rights of human beings are dignified. Her immediate release is a must and not an appeal.

I wonder why most African Presidents have chosen to be Dictators and vent their powers on Media Practitioners who respect their media ethics by just being objective. Jestina Mukoko on her part is carrying out her duty to propagate, motivate to ensure progress. The priority of a Communicator should be to influence or affect changes in the society through educative, objective and mind searching reporting. It is high time African Media Practitioners enjoy Press Freedom. I therefore condem her abduction and beseech those concern to release Jestina.

I am joining the International Women Media Foundation to ask for the release of Jestina Mukoko,I believe that what the Zimbabwean government should be doing at this point is to try to solve the political and economic crisis in the country,I do not think the abuction of Jestina would help bring about any of the above solution, rather it will help compound the human rights record in the country,so I think it will be wiser to release her and any other detained person, whether in the media or human rights.

What angers me the most is the manner in which Justice Yunus Omerjee did not even utter a squeak of rebuke to the police for the kidnap/abduction of allthese activists. Instead he sanitized the illegal nature of the detention by purporting to hold bail hearings. He is an embarrassment to Zimbabwean lawyers.
