Courage in Journalism Awards

Every year the International Women’s Media Foundation honors brave women journalists who risk political persecution, injury and sometimes death in their efforts to expose corruption and champion human rights.

Global Research on Women

The IWMF is working on ground-breaking research on the status of women in the media worldwide. The new study, the Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media, will measure the career progress of women in the news media and use the results to help advocate for change.

The IWMF also tracks past studies on women in the news media, and will draw from this prior work in compiling the Global Report, which will be published in 2011.

4-Year Africa Project

With generous support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the IWMF launched "Reporting on Agriculture and Women: Africa." The project is energizing the way African media cover one of the most important topics on the continent.
The IWMF is helping African journalists to boost coverage of agriculture and rural development and increase women’s voices – both as journalists and as sources – in stories about agriculture

Funding HIV/AIDS Investigative Reporting

The IWMF is establishing 10 fellowships to train journalists in South Africa to write investigative reports on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. With support from the M*A*C  AIDS Fund, these experienced journalists will conduct interviews and write in-depth research for their publications in 2011.

President
Republic of Belarus

Dear President Lukashenko:

We are writing on behalf of the International Women’s Media Foundation to express our alarm concerning distinguished Belarusian journalist Iryna Khalip, who has received alarming new threats.

Khalip, who won an IWMF Courage in Journalism Award in 2009, received an e-mail warning on November 22 that she “will meet with Anna Politkovskaya,” the murdered Novaya Gazeta reporter and 2002 Courage Award winner.

Threats surfaced while Khalip was working on a complicated investigation into the case of Emmanuel Zeltser, an American lawyer who spent 18 months in a Belarusian jail before being released after the intervention of the American Embassy in Belarus. Khalip began receiving threats after submitting the article to her editors but before publication.

On November 25, an anonymous caller said to her, “You have been warned, bitch, haven’t you? If the article is published, you must not leave your house anymore.”

On November 26, she received a telegram from Moscow with clear references to her phone conversations of the prior few days, signaling that she was being closely watched.

Given the history of threats and harassment that that this brave journalist has endured over the years, we take these incidents very seriously. We urge you and Belarusian authorities to investigate and protect Khalip so that she can continue her work as a journalist. We are concerned that the threats against Khalip signal more restrictions on free expression and press freedom in Belarus. All viewpoints should be allowed to be expressed in the media without force or coercion and journalists should be protected in the course of their work by authorities.

As a network of thousands of women and men in the media around the world who are supporters of a worldwide free press, we respectfully urge you to take immediate action to ensure that Khalip is allowed to safely carry out her work. By using your power to ensure that justice is done in this case, you will take a step toward establishing a free and independent press in Belarus.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Akwe Amosu, co-chair

It is so sad to learn that Iryna Khalip is receiving new very serious threats to her life. As a woman journalist whose country has been in turmoil for the past decade, I would want to add my voice to this campaign to ensure she is allowed to do her work without fear or favour. Political persecution of journalists must come to an end. I'm appalled and shocked at the kind of words being used to scare her from doing her job. Anna's death was a pain to all of us who met and knew her. To use her violent death in trying to stop the publication of her articles in this way, is sickening to say the least. So Mr Lukashenko, I'm urge you like all other defenders of human rights and press freedom that you use your power to protect Khalip as she goes about doing her job.

Iryna Khalip need not die as a result of carrying out her legal duty. And it is absolutely imperative for dictators of this world to know that for every journalist murdered for reporting the truth, millions more will rise up to replace him/her. History has proved this over and over again. This, however, is not to say that we expect Iryna Khalip to go the unfortunate way of murdered journalists. Those who live in glass houses - the dictators, that is - should be wary of throwing stones. Governments that want positive coverage should rule justly. Journalists are humans and are entitled to their lives.

Violence has never been the answer. Threatening will not stop her work, but give her the incentive to reveal truths. Go Iryna Khalip! Be strong. There are thousands who support you.

You can't kill truth. It can be suppressed for only so long. In the end, it will win out. Leave the journalist alone.

Please do not assume threats have power. It is only through free expression that true power can be realized.

It is beyond obsurd that she should be threatened for just doing her job. It should never happen.

I believe sustainable development depends on media focused on the challenges facing people who are economically poor and powerless. Information is a vital resource to empower a vigilant public that ultimately holds government accountable through voting and participation. It is proven women in South-Asian media rarely known to have risen to the position of decision-making, except for a few examples. I believe she got courage to develop healthy society. In this contemporary society where globalization holds sway, women journalists’ success is turning out to be fiercely competitive. Their chances to meet her desired goal is curtailed in men dominate profession. Female journalists are not given an equal opportunity to report on those issues considered “serious.” That is why many are given columns which are believed to be “soft.” Unfortunately, this society is also contributed to the discrimination of women in this profession.

Evil shall never triumph over truth, the challenges of a free press will never be reached if the brave like anna- a saint of truth, were to cow and buried the truth, the road is rugged but the path is staedy, we cannot give up the fight.

Same old same old. If a women writes about injustice anywhere in the world, inevitably she is silenced as it's still a male-orientated society, and women are not permitted to have an opinion, much less write about them.

If government's and top leaderships care about the actual practice of democracy, opportunities must be given to all in cluding women to tell their stories as they happen. Submit yourself to the values of free speech and let the woman do her job. Why threaten her? Only cowards who die ten times before their actual deaths do that. If you're not a coward, stop posing threats and let her do her job.

As a young woman involved in media development and literacy with young people, I urge you to set the stage for our future generations of journalists so that they can report on the violations of our basic human rights without the fear of death etc. When will governments realise that a country working to support its journalists to report on the important issues in our society, is a country that will be strong in all it tries to achieve.

its very unfortunate that our beloved world has become a sea of blood.human kind has lost respect for humanity.Nobody cares about the sacredness of human blood anymore.what would it benefit to one to take another's life? we must realise that everything including human life comes from God and he alone has the right to do with it whatever he chooses.Iryna switty, have peace despite all the turmoil around you-remember in this life, we are more than conquerors.Use your faith to remain calm in the midst of these threats and watch what God does. As for the Belarus president, he must know that all authority comes from God, he has the mantle to because God chose him to protect his people. Mr. president, do not let the almighty down! am with you Iryna, Just do your work with your head high, nothing will happen to you, in Jesus Name

The right to free expression and the freedom of the press should be garanted in any democracy. Yet many of those countries, where journalists are constantly threatened ,are facing a kind of democratic deficit or confronted to peace dilemmas or security complex.Burundi is currently overcoming a similar situation and i notice that journalists solidality combined to an international community dialogue have helped to stop the governement tendancy to silence the press. This is why i join the movement to support our colleague Iryna Kalip.

It is disheartening to hear that Iryna Khalip is being threatened. As a journalist, i have a little idea of what she is going through and what she may be feeling having suffered some threats years back after some stories I did. But, Iryna, keep up the good spirit and know that thousands of your colleagues all over the world are praying for you and are solidly behind you.

no journalist should face threats of harm to their person, family, associates and friends because of the honest work they do. those who threaten and actually harm journalists are beneath the lowest of animals; they do not have a place in decent human society and should not be allowed a moment's respite here on earth before they burn in the hottest parts of hell.
