Courage in Journalism Awards

Every year the International Women’s Media Foundation honors brave women journalists who risk political persecution, injury and sometimes death in their efforts to expose corruption and champion human rights.

Global Research on Women

The IWMF is working on ground-breaking research on the status of women in the media worldwide. The new study, the Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media, will measure the career progress of women in the news media and use the results to help advocate for change.

The IWMF also tracks past studies on women in the news media, and will draw from this prior work in compiling the Global Report, which will be published in 2011.

4-Year Africa Project

With generous support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the IWMF launched "Reporting on Agriculture and Women: Africa." The project is energizing the way African media cover one of the most important topics on the continent.
The IWMF is helping African journalists to boost coverage of agriculture and rural development and increase women’s voices – both as journalists and as sources – in stories about agriculture

Funding HIV/AIDS Investigative Reporting

The IWMF is establishing 10 fellowships to train journalists in South Africa to write investigative reports on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. With support from the M*A*C  AIDS Fund, these experienced journalists will conduct interviews and write in-depth research for their publications in 2011.

International Women’s Media Foundation Names Liza Gross Executive Director

Washington, D.C. – The board of directors of the International Women’s Media Foundation today announced that it has named Liza Gross as its new executive director. Gross, who joined the IWMF board in 2004 and served as co-chair in 2007-08, has served as interim executive director of the foundation since April.

“The board unanimously agreed that Liza is the best person to lead the IWMF as we celebrate our 20th anniversary year,” said Akwe Amosu, IWMF co-chair. “Her experience in leadership roles in both the media and non-profits working with the media is extensive. She has been a journalist, a publisher and a dedicated member of the IWMF board, helping to develop many of our signature programs, including the Courage in Journalism Awards and our leadership training for women journalists. We are thrilled she will continue with the IWMF in this new capacity.”

“Liza’s experience as a leader and an international journalist is invaluable to the IWMF, an organization whose goal is to strengthen the role of women in the media worldwide,”  said Campbell Brown of CNN, IWMF co-chair. “Her experience as a leader in international journalism is the perfect fit for us.”

Prior to joining the IWMF, Gross was managing editor/presentation and operations for The Miami Herald, where she was responsible for the newspaper's visual appearance, daily production and weekend news sections. Gross, who has almost 30 years of experience in journalism and communications, is a former executive managing editor of El Nuevo Día, the largest circulation daily newspaper in Puerto Rico, and a former publisher of Éxito, the Spanish-language daily of The Chicago Tribune

A native of Argentina, Gross was an instructor and editor for the Latin American Journalism Program, an educational initiative of Florida International University in Miami. She also served as a reporter and editor on the Latin America desk of the Associated Press in New York City, managing editor of Hispanic magazine, and executive editor of Times of the Americas, a Washington, D.C.-based bimonthly covering Latin America and the Caribbean.

Founded in 1990, the International Women’s Media Foundation is a vibrant global network dedicated to strengthening the role of women in the news media worldwide as a means to further freedom of the press. The IWMF network includes women and men in the media in more than 130 countries worldwide. For more information, visit www.iwmf.org.
