International Reporting Fellowship Program

December 11, 2012 -- The IWMF is offering a reporting fellowship program for women journalists to better understand and report on economic development activities in Western Sahara, and to exchange knowledge with local journalists. To achieve these goals, the IWMF brings two groups of women journalists from international media organizations to Western Sahara.
The first reporting trip took place in December 2012, with participating journalists from CNN, BBC, PBS NewsHour, NPR, the International Herald Tribune and the Christian Science Monitor. Their reporting will be featured on the IWMF’s website.
A date for the second reporting trip has not been set yet.

Carole Simpson Named Recipient of AEJMC’s 2012 First Amendment Award

August 9, 2012 -- The trail-blazing news anchor and member of the IWMF's Advisory Council Carole Simpson will be honored with the 2012 First Amendment Award of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication during its 100th meeting in Chicago on August 10, 2012. A three-time Emmy Award winning anchor and senior correspondent with ABC News for decades, Simpson recently published her memoirs, NewsLady, which recounts her 40-year career as a pioneering African American woman in the field of broadcast journalism. Simpson retired from ABC News in 2006 to become Leader-in-Residence at Emerson College’s School of Communication in Boston.

IWMF Board Member Maria Salinas to be Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

July 18, 2012 -- Jorge Ramos and IWMF Board member Maria Elena Salinas, longtime co-anchors of Univision’s evening newscast “Noticiero Univision” and pioneers of Spanish-language broadcasting in the U.S., will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) at the 33rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards on October 1, 2012.
Salinas and Ramos are the most recognized and influential Hispanic journalists in the U.S. The New York Times has called Salinas “the voice of Hispanic America.” As co–anchors of “Noticiero Univision”, Univision Network’s flagship nightly newscast, Salinas and Ramos reach 96 percent of Hispanic Americans living in the United States averaging nearly two million viewers every night.Salinas' insightful reporting on the impact of daily news to the increasingly growing Hispanic community of Southern California earned her the credibility that would lead her to assume the anchor chair at “Noticiero Univision” in 1987, becoming one of the first women in the U.S. to co-anchor a national nightly newscast.
